South Carolina provides prospective students with the opportunity to earn diplomas to doctoral degrees in nursing in facilities that range from community colleges to teaching hospitals. For those who seek a doctoral degree, the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and the University of South Carolina in Columbia can provide that opportunity. Both schools also offer the BSN, and the MSN in various specialties as well. The Medical University offers a joint MSN/MBA degree in administration, and the Univ. of South Carolina offers MSN/MPH joint degree as well as post-master’s certificates in four specialties. Beginners to nursing can apply at over ten community colleges located throughout the state to earn LPN or RN diplomas, and at least that many schools statewide also offer a BSN. Clemson University and South Carolina State University in Orangeburg offer the MSN degree with specialties that range from administration to gerontology.
Statewide, the average salaries for LPN, RN and specialty nurses range between $12,000 and $66,000 annually, depending upon degree earned, years in the field, expertise and size of the health facility. South Carolina offers plenty of employment opportunities for nursing graduates, as a full half of the top employers in this state are medical facilities. Some examples of these opportunities include: Bon Secours St. Francis Health System in Greenville, which consists of four facilities, employing over 2,100 with a 319-bed capacity; Lexington Medical Center in Columbia, with a system of hospitals, community medical centers and physician practices is the largest extended care facility in the state and an Alzheimer’s Care Center; Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill; Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (SRHS) in Spartanburg and Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals in Columbia with facilities also located in Providence. Another major system is the Carolinas Hospital System in Florence, with 1,700 employees. The Greenville Hospital System provides an atmosphere for clinical, academic and research excellence that serves more than one million people in the upstate area. Greenville Hospital System is a not-for-profit academic health organization that encompasses five campuses. They offer tuition assistance in arenas where students can learn community care, acute care, nursing home experience, outpatient care and wellness center experience. If you’d prefer to live and work on the coast, Hilton Head Regional Medical Center currently is certified for 93 acute care beds within two campuses and an outpatient center. Finally, MUSC Children’s Hospital is South Carolina’s largest and most comprehensive pediatric health care center. Their hospital houses the only Level III neonatal intensive care unit in the region, and the hospital is part of the Medical University of South Carolina.
