Maryland, home of Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, sets the precedent for the nation’s health care systems. Johns Hopkins University is the premier educational environment for nursing students who seek joint degrees in over eight specialties, a PhD, and a post-master’s certificates in arenas such as acute/critical care nurse practitioner to pediatric specialties. But, this university doesn’t represent the only source of quality nursing education in this state. The University of Maryland in Baltimore also provides BSN, MSN, PhD and joint degrees in over twenty specialties. The College of Notre Dame of Maryland, also located in Baltimore, offers a BSN, and Towson University in Towson offers a BSN and MSN in nurse education. Numerous other opportunities to earn nursing degrees statewide are available at many other colleges in Maryland.
Statewide, the average salaries for LPN, RN and specialty nurses range between $15,000 and $84,000 annually, depending upon degree earned, years in the field, expertise and size of the health facility. As mentioned previously, Johns Hopkins represents the premier place to work and learn for many nurses. They are rated as one of the largest state employers with facilities located across several counties. The university employs over 24,000 individuals and their hospital and health system employs over 13,000 people. The University of Maryland Medical System also employs approximately 13,000 individuals in Baltimore, and Adventist Health Care employs over 6,000 individuals in Montgomery. Nurses who seek employment in this state might note that a joint venture of Erickson Retirement Communities, Johns Hopkins Medicine, MedStar Health, and the University of Maryland Medical System has won the support of the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) to plan for the state-wide Health Information Exchange in 2008. This joint venture grew out of conversations in 2006 among the four partner organizations about how to leverage technology to improve the quality of care for Maryland patients.
